Peacock conducted the devotional, and the Rev. J. Alton'Morris spoke on work the c'ass should do, and led a prayer. Report of the nominating com mittee was made by Miss Moselle Moore, chairman. Members Initiated In Eastern Star The regular meeting of Murphy Chapter, No. 10, Order of the Eastern Star was held on Thurs day evening, April 27, with Mrs. Mary Carthron Hensley, Worthy Matron, presiding. The following were initiated: Mrs. Flora Shields and Mrs. Alba Gladson, after which Mrs. Helen 'Moody, secretary, and Mrs. Eliza beth Shields, treasurer, were in stalled. During the social hour, cookies and eoca-oolas were served to the members and visitors present. Women Hold Annual Party The Women of the Presbyterian Church held their annual Birth day Party in the Sunday School assembly room Tuesday afternoon beginning at 3:30 o'clock. ? Mrs. Harvey Wilson, Jr., pre sented the program, telling of the object of the birthday observance which had its origin in 1922. The money contributed at each party las been given one year to a home mission project, and the :.ext to a foreign mission project. This year the Birthday gift will go to Tex-Mex, a school for Mexican boys at Kingsville, Texas, and for Student Work. A sub stantial offering was taken. Mrs. Bruce Gordon was hostess. A lace covered table centered with the birthday cake topped with pink candles, flanked by pots of pink azaleas, and small baskets of mints as favors, was at one end of the room. L. Savage and Mrs. Bill Gentry were co-Jsostesses in the Former's home at the meeting of the Business Women's Circle of First Baptist Church Monday eve ning. Mrs. P. G. I vie was in charge of the program, which was on the subject, "Invisible Bridges". Mrs. J. W. Davidson conducted the devotional, and the following pre sented the information on the subject in the form of a radio program: Mrs. J. W. Donley, Mrs. Alvin Buchanan, Mrs. R. D. Chand ler and Mrs. R. S. Bault. Mrs, W. A. Hoover, president, presided over a business session. Refreshments were served by the hostesses. Guests present included: Mes dames J. E. Mrs. Frank Hembree and Mrs. Fred Roberts spent the week-end in Gastonia visiting Mrs. Hem oree's mother, Mis. Poindexter, ?who was injured in a fall recently. They reported that she was resting well. Heck Circle of first Baptist Church held its regular meeting in the home of Mr C. W. Arnold Tuesday "O, Zion Haste" the opening hymn, a as followed with prayer by Mrs. i. L Savage. Mrs. W. A. SheriU had charge of the devotional period with Mrs. Savage and Mrs. Arnold reading the scripture. The program. "Presses at Work for God" was given by Mrs. L. W. Hendrix, Mrs. Howard McDonald and Mrs. J. B. Hall. After a short tusiness session the hostess, as sisted by Mrs. Savage, served re freshments to the six members present. Fetrie Hospital for several days, has been dismissed. Reports from Mrs. John H. Dil Urd at Piedmont Hospital, Atlan ta. are good and she is expected Ivome soon. Mrs. John Donley is in Murphy General Hospital receiving treat ment. ANDREWS?Miss Dorothy Ed wards, Baptist assoclaftional Mis sionary. who was injured in a car wreck a few weeks ago and has 'been a patient at Rodda Van Gorder Hospital, was able to go to the home of her brother, Wayne Edwards, in Marble the first of the week and is recuperating nicely. ANDREWS ? Horace Higdon who has been a patient at Aston Park Hospital in Ashevilie for She past three weeks is much improv ed and is expected to return home this week-end. Hugh Rayburn is a patient at Rodda Van Gorder Hospital. Freida Jo Adams underwent a minor operation at Rodda Van Gorder Hospital this week. ANDREWS?The Rev. J. J. Wood tuf'fered a heart attack last Thurs day morning while attending Dis trict conference in Franklin. Dr. Ed Angel was summoned And Rev. Wood was taken to the Angel Hospital. Mr. Derreberry is a native of Cherokee County, origi nally from Murphy where he attended1 high school. For eight yeears he was associated with the late V. M. John son at Murphy in the meat and grocery business. Following his discharge from the U. S. army in Decem ber 1945, he established a business in Andrews. He has been Mayor of Andrews for the past two terms and is active in the work of the democrat party. ? Mr. Derreberry is a member of the American Legion 40 and 8 and Andrews Lodge No. 529 A.
